Qi Standard for Wireless Charging– What is it?

New technology is available that will allow some mobile phones to be charged over quite short distances without using a cable.  The advantages of this are that it tends to be quicker and easier, because you don’t need to plug and unplug your phone each time you want to charge it.   You simply place your mobile device on a wireless charging pad.  It is much neater, because there are no cables.

There are different standards available for wireless charging.  One of the most popular is Qi, which is pronounced as ‘chee’.  Qi has been supported by several companies, including Samsung, Google and Nokia.  Today, many more manufacturers of mobile devices are using this new technology in some way.

Devices that are Compatible for Wireless Charging

Some mobile phones already have wireless charging built in.  These include some models from Samsung, Microsoft, Google and Blackberry.  For some other models you need a rear cover replacement or case.  Apple and Sony have devices in this category.  However, even if there is no wireless charging cover available for your model, there is a universal adapter available, which allows even older devices to access this new technology.
